Tergar Osel Ling Monastery and Monastic College (Shedra)

KATHMANDU, NEPAL

Tergar Osel Ling Monastery is the vibrant, spiritual core of the Tergar Lineage, and the home of our spiritual leader, the seventh Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher, spiritual leader and tulku in the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages, which have been unbroken for more than a thousand years.

When Mingyur Rinpoche returned from his 4.5 year retreat in 2015, he was deeply saddened to see the extensive damage to Osel Ling Monastery from the earthquake that struck Nepal in the spring of that year.  In response, Rinpoche decided to rebuild and expand Osel Ling Monastery and Shedra  to become a center for experiential learning.  Since then, the entire vision has come to fruition: the main shrine hall has been built to accommodate 2500 people; there are apartments for monastic staff, visiting teachers and guests;  classrooms, a library and dormitories to accommodate 300 monks.

The Monastic College (Shedra) at Osel Ling Monastery has been under the direction of Khenpo Gyurmé Wangche, since 2010. The course of study at the monastic college consists of a thirteen-year program comprising a preparatory year followed by twelve consecutive years.

Mingyur Rinpoche’s  vision also included the building of schools for children from the Himalayan region through Tergar Charity Nepal and in Kathmandu and Yolmo through  Tergar Schools and to create an experiential learning center for adult dharma students in Kathmandu through Tergar Institute. His new non-profit, Himalayan Environment and Life Protection (H.E.L.P.), was created to continue Tergar Charity Nepal’s environmental and women’s empowerment work.  All these projects have been supported by the Yongey Foundation and its generous donors.

“When you transform your mind, everything you experience is transformed.”
